Mark Zuckerberg announces the change. The new name "Meta", from the Greek "beyond", best represents the new reality of Facebook which for some time also includes Messenger, Instagram, Whatsapp, Quest VR and the Horizon VR platform.
What may have seemed like rumors are now reality. Zuckerberg has in fact made official the change of the name of the social network that exploded in 2004, showing the company's desire to look to the future: the Metaverse.
Considered by many experts the Internet platform of tomorrow, the Metaverse represents a 3D virtual space where you can share increasingly immersive experiences with other people. A place where users can interact, work, create products and contents in a new ecosystem whose borders are still being defined.
During the Connect conference, an annual event dedicated to developments in virtual and augmented reality, the Meta logo was presented, which was designed to be viewed in both 2D and 3D and reminiscent of the symbol of infinity. Yes, because the goal of the CEO of Facebook is, as he himself says, to go beyond infinity.
While American society is grappling with what many say is the worst crisis in its history, Zuckerberg decides to focus everything on virtual reality to make the social network par excellence more immersive and engaging.
This year the so-called "Facebook Papers", internal documents that reveal questionable practices of the holding based in Menlo Park, have in fact seriously threatened the reputation of the brand by highlighting issues such as, to name one, the lack of transparency in the processing of personal data of users.
With the introduction of the "Meta", the question arises spontaneously whether it is a strategy to revive interest in social media, with particular reference to the young target, or an inevitable process of digital convergence.
Perhaps the metaverse could incentivize people to spend more time on Facebook and attract the ever-decreasing attention of the under-25s who are now oriented especially on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. What is certain is that the announcement of the new name had the first effect of giving wings to the shares of the company that has earned 4.3% on the stock market. The future will give us if Zuckerberg is going on the right direction and, as always, the outcome of these choices will be determined by the users.
For now it’s estimated that the digital giant, in the next five years, will create 10,000 jobs in Europe and that, through the Metaverse, it will reach over a billion people in the next decade.
