Following the proposal by the deputy Francesco Boccia (PD) to introduce a new taxation for the multinational corporations like Google that make profit in the Italian market, the hypothesis of a resolution like this is being discussed. Let’s try to explain the situation.
In the last years we have experienced an economic crisis that’s damaging each kind of business sector, but that has not been able to stop the incredible rising of digital giants, such as Google and Amazon. The first one is in the eye of the storm and is the (un)lucky leading light of Boccia’s proposal. The reason of this battle vs. digital Goliath is the missed payment of taxes to the country in which they get profits. To give an example, currently Big G is able to reach advertising revenues of about 500 million €, only in Italy! But our country doesn’t receive a lot of taxes related to this turnover. Thanks to some deceptions (absolutely legal operations) that allow Google, and friends, to take advantage of remarkable tax benefits. It is so a problem related to the “fiscal optimizations” practiced by the multinational corporations that involve resources available thanks to Italians investments, but that generate money flows in different countries.
Boccia would like to allow our companies to compete with Digital giants on a neutral field, equitably regulated. Currently, the opinions on this matter are various. Some people, citing the U.S. Forbes, call him “a dangerous man, some other see his proposal an equal treatment of multinational and Italian companies.
We'll see what will be the decisive algorithm that will lead to a real and egalitarian tax optimization.
